Why I Love Being a Nonprofit Major
I wasn’t originally a nonprofit major when I first started my freshman year at High Point University. When I first came to High Point University in August 2013 during my freshman year, I originally wanted to be a biology major (since I wanted to either be a veterinarian or a pharmacist).
During October, after being in a hard chemistry course, I figured out that biology wasn’t going to be the best major for me. Months later during my spring semester of my freshman year, I decided to change my major to strategic communications. Sophomore year was the year I decided to change my major to nonprofit leadership and management after realizing strategic communications wasn’t the right major for me either.
Strategic communications wasn’t the major I thought it would be because I realized that I am not good with writing press releases. Even though I am good at writing, I saw that I did better in regular writing and not writing having to do with press releases. What I love about being a nonprofit major is that through my courses at HPU, I am learning about essential nonprofit skills that in the future will help me towards my future career in the nonprofit world. I want to make a difference in the world since many problems still occur in the world including environmental problems, poverty, homelessness, etc.
Even after two years in my major I still don’t have a favorite type of nonprofit that I love because I think that every different type is unique since not all nonprofits help the same cause. It feels weird that I am going to be getting my bachelor’s degree in nonprofit leadership and management in less than a month from now, but I realized that it is okay to change your major more then once while getting your bachelor’s degree; even though you may be set on studying a certain major during your freshman year, you may realize after taking certain courses that another major might be better to study while getting your bachelor’s degree.
